Little blocks instead of brush

Is there anyone who has seen this before and knows what the problem is? I am just starting to learn how to use photoshop, so I might be making a beginner's mistake here. When I am using my brush it should look like the first picture, but it doesn't. Instead it looks like the second picture and it's driving me crazy. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong here?

Hey, @mark_4178. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy and paste into a text document > upload and attach here.

Does this happen with documents of all sizes? What troubleshooting have you tried?

I'll move this to discussions for now. Try this:

Go to Photoshop > Settings (CMD + K) > Performance > Advanced Settings > Disable 'GPU Compositing' & restart Photoshop.

Check if it helps & let us know how it goes. Thanks!
