Maintaining filename when opened in PS from LR

I open a NEF file from LR to PS and make edits and want to maintain the filename from LR when saving it. The filename will now be a PSD or PSB file. Previously, I created a template in LR from the Renameing menu and everything worked the way I expected. It looks like I have screwed up the preset but can't figure out what I did.

An example renamed file after downloading from camera is:   Valley of Fire State Park_Firewave_8503456_0014_Master Image.NEF

How do you create a naming preset so the filename is maintained (minus the NEF which becomes a PSD or PSB file) when saving a file originally opened in PS from LR?

Hopefully I haven't confused the issue and someone can help.

Thank you.

Mike

I am a bit confused. You do not need special file name if that is your question like it must start with underscore or letter if thats what you want to ask. What is desired or normal outcome versus current that is not satisfying. Can you describe steps from start to end?

I thought I may have confused the issue by not providing an example. So, is an example.

  1. Import photos to LR from camera without changing the file name.

      _8505530.NEF

  1. Rename photo(s) in LR using the following Filename Template:

    Custom Text_Original number suffix_Sequence #_Master File

resulting in this filename for the photo

     Capitol Reef NP_Hickman Bridge_8505530_0001_Master File.PSD

  1. Complete LR adjustments then send to PS for additional adjustments.

Filename in PS is same as filename in 2 above (good)

  1. Complete PS adjustments and save file using File>Save

     resulting in a different filename

     untitled_8505530_031_Master File.PSD

Not sure why "untitled" rather than the photo name (Capitol Reef NP_Hickman Bridge) was used in the filename. The  photo sequence number (0001) was also not included in the filename. What is the number 031 - editing version #? If so, why did it replace the original photo sequence number of 0001?

I hope this helps.

1.  Start in LR with a photo named: Capitol Reef NP_Hickman Bridge_8505530_0006_Master File.NEF

2.  Send to PS, filename remains the same as in LR

3.  Make edits in PS then Save (File>Save)

4. Photo is saved with a filename different than the original filename. The saved photo has filename: untitled-2.tiff

Hopefully these steps help.

What kind of edits are you making? I don't have PS sitting right in front of me, except for the iPad version, since I'm away from my desk, but I don't recall NEF being a file type in Photoshop. I could totally be wrong though

NEF is the Nikon RAW file when I load files from the camera to computer. Once in LR catalog the photo is sent to PS for whatever edits then saved back into LR either as a PSD or TIFF.

There's something odd going on here. Once the file is open in Photoshop, the name shouldn't change again. That's the name the file will save under.

Can you try a Save As, just to see the filename it will use?

Untitled is what you get when you save a new file, one created in Photoshop, or if you copy/paste into a new document.

Just for reference, here is where you edit the name in Lightroom for "edit in Photoshop". What you set here is what comes up in Photoshop:

Lr_naming11.png

I haven't bothered to change anything, but you can pretty much set up any naming scheme you can think of here.
