Question

Mask icon not showing when dragged to another layer.

Hi,

With a new update (24.7.2 and newer) a new problem arose when dragging masks to other layers.

When I now drag a mask to another layer the mask icon on the layer doesn't show up. It is however applied because you can see the effect on the image. It is only after I manually make a change to the mask that it suddenly appears (i.e. invert the mask or draw on it). It also shows up if I drag the mask twice to the new layer.

For obvious reasons this is a problem because I can't see right away if a layer has a mask on it or not and mistakes can easily be made.

Can someone tell me if there is a setting I can change to remove this behaviour. Or is it just a bug that needs fixing?

I use Windows and a collegue who uses Apple doesn't have the problem with this version of Photoshop.

For some reason each new update brings on an array of new bugs or problems. Very annoying and time wasting.

Thanks for chiming in 🙂

Hey, @jonathanv94257306. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll move this to discussions for now and help you figure this out. Before troubleshooting, update Photoshop to the latest version (v25.5.1) via the Creative Cloud desktop app & check if the issue exists.

Please share your workflow in screenshots or a video. Try these steps:

Go to Edit > Preferences (CTRL + K) > Performance > Advanced Settings > Disable 'GPU Compositing' & restart Photoshop & check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes.

Hi Sameer,

I have tried your instructions but sadly without prevail. I'll upload a video of what happens.

As you can see in the video when I drag the mask from one layer to another (to make it a duplicate on a another layer) the effect of the mask takes place on the image, but on the layer mask icon you cannot see the mask. Only when you make a change to it suddenly the mask icon is visible.

I also saw another post of someone mentioning the same problem and this problem has been around for about a year now. Really hope it can be resolved soon.

Thanks!
