Question

Mask keeps growing when duplicating layer

I see to run into a problem when duplicating a layer with a mask I created around a subject. Every time I copy the layer the mask keeps adding a pixel to the new copyed layer so more of the masked out part is showing.

Anyone has the same problem or any  idea why this is happening and how I can stop that

thanks

If you have a layer mask with anti-aliased edges then duplicate that layer, you will notice that the edge becomes more solid as you increase the number of copies. You could switch to a clipping mask as r-bin suggested, or you could increase the contrast on your layer mask. If you'd like to trim your layer mask by 1 pixel (or however many pixels you want), select the layer mask, Ctrl + click (Command + click on a Mac) on the layer mask to load the selection. Go to Select > Modify > Contract and set the number of pixels. Invert the selection by going to Select > Inverse (Ctrl + Shift + I, Command + Shift + I on a Mac), and fill the selection with black.

I doubt the mask is growing.
Most likely, the edges of the mask are a bit blurry.
To avoid supposedly “enlarging” the mask, use grouping (clipping mask). After duplicating the layer, press Crtl + Alt + G.
