Hi

I created a mask of a layer without selecting anything so obviously the whole mask is white. I then used object selection tool to select what I wanted, but how do I add it to my mask?

Once you make a selection of what you want, you will have to invert the selection, by pressing shift-ctrl/cmd-I. Then fill the mask with black, using the selection.

Hi!

On generally creates the selection, then convert it to a layer mask.

But, if you want to continue with the existing mask, do as Chuck described, I'll just add: To target the mask, ALT+click on its thumbnail.
