merge shapes but keep separate colors

can I merge two shapes that are different colors onto one layer and keep the separate colors AND vector properties?

The reason the answer was no is that the stroke and fill colour is a property of the Vector shape - so combining two shapes to make one new shape will only have one new stroke and one new fill colour

Rather than Merging the Shapes, I would combine them into a group.

The short answer is no; refer to the suggestion by @Semaphoric  or convert them into a Smart Object layer.

As has already been said, it is not possible.

 

However, if a smart object is also out of the question for you, there may still be a workaround. However, only if the boundary between the two original shapes forms a straight line. 

 

Assign a gradient to the combined shape as a "hard gradient" (both colors at the same position)
