Moving a selection not the whole layer

Hello

I have created a bespoke canvas and created a new layer onto which I have placed an image.

I simply want to move a specific part of the image to a new position nearby.

I use the select tool to make my selection however when I try to move it using the move tool, the whole layer/image moves instead of the small area I have selected strangely.

When you chose File > Place, you most likely created a Smart Object, which is why the entire image is moving.

Do one of these:

• Convert to layers (right-click layer in Layers panel)
  
  
  or
  
  
• Open the SO (double-click icon in Layers panel
  Select and move the selection
  Save and close the PSB to return to the PSD
