Question

NAS files override and opening issues

Hi guys

Using a QNAP NAS on Mac OS X M1X, and been on to their support - they said we should post something for Adobe as well so they can chip in or are away.

We've used the NAS for 24 months fine - but recently after using Final Cut switched to Studio Macs M1X & Ultra - and to the SMB file system to work from on the NAS drive for speed. We have tried to use NFS instead for the interim, which doesn't seem to have this bug, but it's much slower on the new Macs sadly and skips the cache drives on the NAS.

The bug: When opening files in Adobe software (parituclarly Ps) and then trying to save, override, or come out of it and wait - then reopen - we are unabe to open the docuemnts again unless we clone them or restart.

We've always edited before so I know that's not a normal thing we should face, but we need to get to the bottom of this please as soon as possible as we've set up quite a fast NAS and other software and files are not giving us this issue.

QNAP are looking in to this too, and we also read this and made sure the NAS is fully updated and running the latest firmware, etc. It certainly seems to be Adobe software related - but it's also to do with the SMB file system it seems.

This is an issue with Mac OS and it's been getting worse since Big Sur and Monterey. SMB or AFP don't make a difference.

The Finder itself is super agressive with read/write permissions. If you have anything with a preview (column view or hitting space for quick view) - the OS Finder app locks it up stating the file is in use and can't be opened/overwritten/deleted, etc.

Adobe's official stance on removable media and servers is to save local and drag over.

This insures proper permissions and no speed read/write issues saving directly from the software to the external location.

It doesn't matter how fast your connection/drive is. This issue has been around for years.

One thing you could try instead of restarting your computer is to disconnect your connection/eject the NAS then quit PS and reconnect. If the files still do not allow action, then that tells you its the Mac OS not PS holding them up.

If restarting your Mac and reconnecting (or waiting for a period of time) restores file permissions - it proves the same.

Quitting PS is all that is required to break connections between the app and files themselves. Whether the Mac OS communicates that permission change is another issue.
