Need help creating this effects

hi all I am a noob in photoshop, started learning few weeks ago in web designing. I really want to know how to make this effect of the bg img  + the curvy edges at the botto. Thx in advance!

That's just basic vector editing with a vector mask and a vector shape using the pen tool. In my example, I converted the background layer into a normal layer by clicking on the lock icon in the layer panel. Then I drew a path around the upper third of the image .

I then converted it to a vector mask by holding the ctrl/cmd key and clicking on the layer icon in the layer panel:

Using the pen tool again, I changed the mode to create a shape layer rather than a path, and the path is filled with a gradient. I drew the swoosh under the image, and added a white solid color adjustment layer under everything.
