Need help with filters

After going into filter gallery, I click on a filter but it does not show on the image. How can I fix this.

Is the Eye visible next to the Effect name as shown in the screenshot below?

If not, click in the empty space to see the Eye and filter effect.

In addition, what are your foreground and background swatches? They may both be white, for instance. Type "D" to reset them to black and white, then try the filter again.
