New Way of Selecting Layers in Photoshop?

In earlier versions of Photoshop, an image could only be selected by selecting the LAYER in the Layers Panel; in this new version (Photoshop CC 17) whenever I click on an image on the canvas, that layer becomes selected. It's very frustrating because I've used Photoshop for 25 years and I'm used to selecting the layer then making my changes. Now, even when the correct layer is selected, I often miss the image when I click on it and if there's something near it, it becomes selected. why is that happening now and is there a way to turn that function off?

Hi

With the move tool selected go to the options bar and uncheck "Auto Select"

Inccidentally CC2017 is not now the latest. CC2018 was released last week
