No zoom possible after use of selection tool with fixed dimensions

Hi,

There is a long lasting bug in Photoshop (Windows 64-bit), still present in the 2018 CC version, preventing from zooming in or out (keyboard or mouse) after having used the selection tool with fixed dimensions (and sometimes the selection tool with fixed proportions). You must select another tool (for instance the lasso tool) and then the zoom becomes possible again. This problem does not occur with the selection tool in normal mode.

It is very surprising that this bug has not been yet corrected, so please do it!

Hi Pascal,

We're sorry to hear that you're facing zoom issue with Photoshop, however, I just tried reproducing this issue at my end on Photoshop CC 2018 version and I was able to zoom in even after using the selection tool with fixed dimensions.

Could you please try resetting the preferences of Photoshop and let us know if it helps with the issue?

Hello Sahil, and thank you very much for your quasi-instantaneous reply!

I fully reset Photoshop data by deleting all files and folders from the folder C:\Users\Pascal Garin\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC 2018. I then restarted Photoshop in a "virgin" configuration and ticked in the preferences tools submenu "Zoom with mouse scroll", "Animated zoom" and "Center at the clic location" (I don't know what is the exact English terminology as I use a French version.

This is what I did afterwards:

  • I opened a 1920x1080px image
  • I chose the selection tool with fixed dimensions and set its dimensions to 800x800px
  • I moved around the square and could actually zoom in and out
  • I then set the selection tool in normal mode, without moving the selection, the zoom becomes inefficient or erratic with the keyboard
  • I moved a little bit the selection square, and then the zoom became again active with mouse scroll

I have observed this behaviour since a long time, and I am surprised that nobody has raised this issue before me.

    In the last release of Photoshop (2019), this problem is not yet corrected: impossible to zoom with the mouse wheel after the use of the selection tool with fixed dimensions or fixed proportions.
