Question

Not Enough Memory (RAM) Error

I have a PC (Win 7-64 Pro) with 64 GB RAM and I am getting an error message that says "Could not apply the workspace because there is not enough memory (RAM)".  I am trying to open a large 32-bit TIFF File (~810,000 KB).  My C-drive is tight on space (~7 GB Free) but I have tons of space on othter drives specified as scratch disks.  With 64 GB of RAM I cannot understand why this error pops up.

Help...

    Hi

The issue you are having is most likely due to this

Error while accessing performance preferences - 'An integer between 96 and 8 is required.'

Which was fixed in version 19.1.5

You have 2 choices either update to version CC2018 19.1.6 or apply the fix in the article

Unfortunately, I am running 19.1.6 and I had tried the fix anyway and it did not help.

Good article, but for the purposes here it omits one crucial element: The Photoshop scratch disk.

Photoshop moves vast amounts of data around, and RAM is never enough to hold it all. So Photoshop reserves a portion of your drive for temporary storage of working data, aka scratch disk. The scratch disk is Photoshop's "main memory", with RAM as a fast access cache. Very often, "not enough memory"-messages really refer to disk space.

How much space you need for the scratch disk depends on how big your files are (and how many are open at the same time). It could be anywhere from 80GB to a full TB.

    Hi

You really need to free up space on your C drive, 7GB is way to low, first thing you should try to do is free up space to see if that resolves the issue.

    Take a look here

How Much Free Space Should You Leave on Your Windows PC?

Also you haven't mentioned what version of Photoshop you have

If your C: disk is Photoshop's first scratch disk Photoshop will fill your C: disk in short order and you systems performance will go to pot make sure C: is not Photoshop first scratch disk. Your Performance should not look like this
