Nvidia Tool for Photoshop CC

Guest
Nov 26, 2013 Nov 26, 2013

Hi,

I noticed that Nvidia Tool (for creating normal maps) is only compatible with all CS versions but not with CC, does anyone knows how to install the Nvidia Tool or how or if it is compatible with Photoshop CC?

Thanks!

The built-in tool seems to work good for creating normal maps, but I miss the "normalize" feature.

I understand that there are workarounds if you load it in CS6 and copy it over but I have not tested that information yet.

Photoshop's Normal Map filter creates them in an odd way, introducing a blur to the data because... well... it's not clear why.

Presumably there is a way to use the dialog to remove the blur but there is very little documentation on what the UI elements actually do, so it's impossible to be sure the normal map has been generated without it. For people who need that precision (myself included), this is a deal-breaker.

nVidia's plugin is preferable to this because their default is to NOT mess with the data, and it offers several options for customizing the map (tangent vs. world-based, directions of the axes, vertical exaggeration, etc.)

I've written normal map filters for other software before, so I know it's very easy to just set up the basic functionality without the blur. It seems inexplicable that Adobe would add this cruft to the filter when it would be both more easy and more useful to not add it. Odd for a company that's lately been stressing the importance of user experience.

I'm also getting the same problem when trying to make a normal map. I'm trying to get the application but as it says they are only for CS. Can anyone find a download plug-in that creates normal maps for CC?

Okay I think I figure out the normal map problem. If anyone is reading this it turns out there is a normal map application already in Photoshop cc. My computer has Photoshop 2017 and I simply merged my grayscale images together into one image.

  1. Then go to Filter tab at the top
  2. Go down the list to 3D
  3. It should say Generate Normal Map and then an option box should appear an you can make any adjustments to it. It also has the Generate Bump map as well.

Hope this helps anyone.

That doesn't help for FSX or PD3 texture files. They need to be converted from and back into DTX formats.

Have you tried the Intel Texture Works plugin?

It seems to be a Win10+CC issue, Win7+CC works.

That's true, but photoshop won't save them as dds files, hence the need for a plugin.

It's easy...

Install the NVIDIA Texture Tool and just remove the NormalMapFilter64.8bf file from Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Plug-ins\Filters folder which crashes the application. Now you can use Photoshop's Bump or Normal Map Filter from menu Filter -> 3D and Save As DDS because of the file dds64.8bi which is located in Adobe Photoshop CC 2019\Plug-ins\File Formats folder and has been installed with NVIDIA Texture Tool installation.

I hope I helped...

not anymore!  Adobe is removing all it's 3D tools, normal map included.  So we are back to square one to find a good application that will make good Normal maps, and no the Nvidia Photshop filter will not work in CC.  And no I am not about to subscribe to a new subscription from Adobe just to get that one component!
