Oil Paint filter doesn't work.

I have the PS 20.1 (sp?)  but I still can't use the oil paint filter (although I could use some other filters. My GPU is 3050 and I know it's not compatible. What I want to know are any of the Intel Core series (i5, etc) compatible with it? That's all I see when I look for laptops. I'm considering buying one. My laptop doesn't have much memory (4GB although I was able to add a little more). If I get one with 8GB would that help? Thanks in advance.

Oh yes, the i5s are OpenCL compatable. Even my 7 y.o. Dell and 2012 Macbook Pro can run it. You need at least OpenCL 1.2 support and Help > System Info in Photoshop will tell you what you have.

Why it is asking you to upgrade drivers, I don't know.

Go through the GPU guide to see if any of the steps fix it.

You definitely need the OpenCL active on order to have Oil Paint. Unlike other filters, it does need that.

I would recommend getting a new PC of at all possible. What's the best? Look at what you do and read this article: https://www.slrlounge.com/best-computer-specs-photoshop-computer-par/

That's what I thought and thanks for the link. I guess we could close this now.

I don't know exactly what's causing the error, but 4 GB is sparse for Photoshop which needs 8 GB, some going to the Intel Graphics card.

You can allocate ram in Preferences > 3D  I prefer 1.5 GB

Also set your Drawing Mode to Basic, check OpenCL and restart Photoshop:

OpenCL still greyed out. And I followed your instructions.  I think you're right about the memory. One time I found away to increase it to 7.  Funny how I can use the other filters like lightning effects but not the oil paint.

Oil Paint filter has to have an RGB document and OpenCL must be checked on. 8 GB main memory main memory is a must, but I'm not sure a 3050 meets requirements. Seems pretty old.

Look at this first: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/oil-paint-greyed-out.html

If you need more help go to Help > System Info in Photoshop, click the Copy button and paste the results in your reply.

I'll change your subject line to more accurately describe the issue.

Use the Blue reply button to keep your answers in order.

The oil filter isn't greyed out.  However, when I select it, it says I need to update my driver. My computer is a couple years old. How do I know a computer has an open CL when I shop for one?
