Old Edge highlighter tool. What to use in current CC photoshop. Dilemma!

Hello,

A bit of a conundrum. I watched a video on YouTube and want to cut out an image the way the artist did.

However, I know it was a previous version of PS (maybe PS3 or 4) and I can't find the same tool. I can see
many different tutorials online and using the magic wand tool or quick selection tool seems to be the go to, butit's not quite the same thing.

The previous tool was the edge highlighter tool. Here's some screen shots of the process I want to follow...

So the current process doesn't quite allow you to run the pen around the edge, it just uses some wizardry to guess the edges, and it's not quite right for the task I need to do.

Does anyone have an idea or a tutorial for something similar to this but using the current CC photoshop?

Original video below in case you want full process, starts at 51 secs.

Thanks in advance,

Louise

If your drawing has a well defined edge like her rabbit you may want to see how well select subject does.  Maybe some select and mask after that to refine the edges.  In that video It look like she might have used  some third party plug-in the extract the rabbit using some refine the edge tool the plug-in has. Photoshop has many selection tools you may want to try to use.  I normally start with a color channel copy to create complex selections.

Also if you press shift and Click on Select and Mask Photoshop old Refine  selection will open.

She might have used UltiMatte Knockout, where one would brush along the object’s edge and then define which side was inside (and it used green, red and blue overlays).

I think that functionality was pretty much included in Photoshop later on but evolved to the current Select and Mask Workspace.

Hey, thanks for screen shots, that helps (i'm a visual learner) to see what I could expect. I'll take a look at the tool and see if I can apply to my work

»Extract« it was called apparently … but I doubt the optional plugin would work with a modern version of Photoshop.

I hated that tool... select and mask has the refine edge brush - same thing and works much better.
