Question

Opacity

I am brand new to Photoshop, but I desperately need help here.
I'm trying to lighten an image I have so I can add text to it and have the text pop out more. I've tried changing the opacity, and it works, but I get a checkerboard look that I really do not want.
Can anyone please help?

As I mentioned before, you can add a white fill layer above your image then adjust the opacity to where the text shows clearly. You can also add an outer glow to the text through the layer effects I. The layer panel. This will also help make text stand out on a busy background.

If you lessen the opacity, you start to see through the image and see the checkerboard that indicates that the image is partially transparent

There are better ways to lighten an image, such as levels or curves, adding a white fill layer and lowering its opacity to give a whitish cast to the image. Can you post a screen shot and describe in more detail what you want to achieve?

Chuck...thank you so much for responding.
I'm such a novice here that I've only been able to post an image after taking a picture on my iPhone (attached.)
Basically I just want to soften the overall image to the point where I can write text on top of it without it seeming to busy. Does that make sense??

Try using the blur effects.

If you're having trouble with low pixel opacity even if your layers and masks are okay, my previous script will help. It's Japanese, but it's okay.

But in this case we don't need this script...
