I would like to know how restoring  the original settings cause I have caused   a problem.

If you're referring to resetting the preferences

I'm not sure if I understand your question, but to restore defaults go to Preferences > General and click on Reset Preferences on Quit. Then click OK and close and restart Photoshop.
