paint brush tool presets

I need help with indentifying what brushes I can use for paint brush tool versus smudge tool versus eraser.

After I have selected the brush tool, I go in to change my brush tools here

but VERY frequetly when I click back to my work, I get automatically bumped from my paint brush tool to my smudge tool, indicating that I've picked a brush that only works as a smudge tool and not a paint brush.  How do I see, before clicking, which are purely paint brushes?
