Paint bucket tool not working properly

Help! I am filling out a form for character design. When I had to use the Fill tool to color the character's shirt red, it instead filled with gray. I did it with other colors and followed the gamut alerts, but nothing worked. Even the brush tool started having the same problem, so I can't do anything to color the shirt! Can anyone help me?
