Painting over Layer Styles

Hi! I'm wondering if it's possible to paint over layer styles. For example, let's say I have a "Wood" style that is great to use to paint a brown fence. Now, let's say as a homeowner I've decided I'd like to slap a coat of blue paint over the fence! I tried attaching a clipping layer to the fence layer, so I could paint blue over it. However, nothing happens then when I click and drag my brush over the area I want to change color.

Why doesn't this work? (And how can I make it work?)

Thank you! Austin 🙂

Right-click on layer.  Select Rasterize Layer Style.

Now you can paint over it.
