Paste from Illustrator as separate objects

If I copy a bunch of shapes in Illustrator, is there a way to paste them into PS as individual smart objects instead of having to do it one by one?

Of course not.

But your approach seems peculiar to me.

Why not paste as Layers and, if necessary, convert the elements to Smart Objects?

And that would seem a unnecessary as the elements can contain Shape Layers and Type Layers anyway.
