Pattern Stamp Tool. - can't select with alt+right click

I can't get the pattern stamp tool to work. When I try to select the pattern from the photo I'm in with the alt+right click, then click where I want that pattern to go, it gives me a black dot instead of the pattern. Any suggestions? BTW I'm a windows user.
