This is perhaps the oldest PS question but the answer keeps changing! I have currently a PC which I use for photo editing alongside LR. The current spec is a 6 core AMD FX6100 cpu clock speed 3.3Ghz - 24GB RAM Quadro K2200 GPU (one of the Adobe recommended GPU's) all on an Azus MoBo M5A99X EVO R2.0. The operating system is Win 10 64 bit and the SSD where the programs are is a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB. All the data files are on a separate Seagate 2TB SSHD SATA drive. I have tried moving the scratch disc around but it made no difference (there are other drives on the pc with space)

I have followed all the recommendation for performance improvement on this site (and others) but the refresh rate after making an adjustment is very slow (over 5 seconds in some cases) so following fine adjustments is very difficult. All the analysis software checking performance suggests my system is around the 45% average for a similar system.

I only use this PC for photo editing emails and the occasional Word / Excel operation (Office 365).

I am considering an upgrade but given that my current spec is, in theory, well beyond Adobe recommendations, I would like some guidance as to what I should upgrade my system to. I will build it myself but suggestions would be most helpful.

Following all the helpful suggestions I have realised (using task manager) when PS does something there is a significant CPU and memory activity but when LR does something there is a direct effect (80%) on the CPU and no impact on the GPU what so ever.

Is this normal?

Both Photoshop and Lightroom are pretty intensive system-wise but I'd say Photoshop is even more intensive due to its compositional capabilities (especially on multi-layer documents at high dimensions and bit-depths). I'm not as well-versed with Lightroom (being a Bridge/Camera Raw user myself) but I always thought it used whatever GPU was available with gusto just like Camera Raw does. Even so, I can't really get Camera Raw to crack 5% GPU use on my GTX 1060 (a less capable card compared to the Quadro).

Probably putting this in wrong place but I wanted to thank everyone for the input to my question. I have updated the GPU driver (slight panic as lost all sound but managed to recover!) and will try the other options before I come back for more advice. Thanks all.

How much memory is a typical document taking up? (You can also check out what's going on behind the scenes in Windows by using Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open up Task Manager. Click "More details" at the bottom and the "Peformance" tab to see how much memory is being used overall at the current moment.)

Is there anything else running in the background? Most apps worth their salt will let you exit/close them in the SysTray (that area in the lower right corner). Try going as barebones as possible to see if it affects Photoshop's performance any.

That spec should cope with simple photo editing, and I would not expect lag unless you have a super high res camera and like to work in 16 bit. My previous system noticed the difference when I switched to a 50Mp Canon 5DS.

However, there are some image types that do seem to cause performance issues, and even my current i9-7900X runing at 4.1Ghz with 64Gb RAM, but only a GTX970, slows down with some projects, and not particularly big projects at that.

Give us your system info as Dave suggested, and tell us some more about what sort of projects cause performance issues. And don't rush into updating until you have a proper handle on it all.

My images are mostly CR2 type from a Canon 5d Mk 3. Typical size 5760 x 3840 ~ 63m. I generally work in 16bit colour for print output.

The slow down seems fairly universal but is most noticeable when using filters, noise reduction, masking to blur / sharpen parts of the image etc. Also the final rendering of a multi layer image can be quite slow.

What size image (in pixels) are you working on and what adjustments are you making that are slow?

Can you go to Help >System info and click copy. Then paste the info here. It may help us see if anything on your system set up is less than optimal.
