Pen tool bug - connecting lines not visible

I have this annoying bug where the connecting lines between points (when creatign a shpae using the pen tool) are not visible. Extremely frustrating - intermittent but regular problem.

The only solution that works so far is to select a different layer, change to a different tool, then select the layer I was previously on, reselct the pen tool and then try drawing the shape again. This solution drives me bonkers after the 3rd or 4th time in the space of a few minutes.

I've attached an image: left is what the issue looks like, right is after the above solution. Any help would be great, this has become so frustrating that I have been searching for an alternative to photoshop after using it for almost 2 decades. I had this problem with previous PS versions also.

Perhaps it is some conflict with my Wacom tablet? Or perhaps I'm missing something frustratingly obvious? Any solutions would be much appreciated.

Hello Cory,

I tried enabling 'Deactivate Native Canvas' and restarting but it made no differernce.

When carrying out a screen recording I discovered the bug was not reproducible following the exact steps I had described. It seemed to be a bit more specific to the layers and what is interacted with in a particular order. This time I was not able to reproduce it every time I toggled the group visibility. It was triggered after interacting with layers in separate groups.

In the attached video I was able to reproduce the bug by duplicating a layer in a separate group (lower in the layer order). I've reproduced this when the dupliated layer is a smart object, rasterised layer and vector shape. I initially thought the shape layer being editied need to be nested in 2 groups; I also thought that possible the shape being added to needed to be in a group with up to 6-8 other shape layers - but I'm not 100% sure on these parameters now.

Apologies for the video length (3+ mins) but I was figuring it out as I went. You can see the bug first appear at 54s when I place a screenshot into a separate group then try and add to the effected shape layer.

One other thing @PSTricenarian , have you tried going to

Preferences > Technology Previews and enable Deactivate Native Canvas.
Restart Photoshop.

Hi Cory,

Thanks, tired restoring preferences by following your steps. Was working fine for about an hour then the bug reappeared again.

But, on a good note. I have figured out the exact steps to reproduce the bug every time without fail. The bug happens following these steps:

1. Create any shape with the pen tool

2. Use the pen tool to further add or subtract to the same shape layer (using 'Combine Shapes' or 'Subtract Front Shape')

3. Toggle visibility of the group that the shape is inside to hide the layer (shape must be inside a group and hiding the specific layer does not reproduce the bug - must be the group incasing the shape layer that is being hidden) The group I'm working in in nested in another group - so it's 2 folders deep - and has 6 other shape layers in the same group.

4. Toggle the folder's visibility again to 'unhide' the layer.

5. Continue trying to add or subtract more shapes from the same shape layer using the pen tool - connecting lines are missing.

-- I can reproduce this every time. I can attach a video if that helps?

Hi @PSTricenarian sorry to hear this, curious if this might be a GPU incompatible issue.

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere:

Does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.
