Performance overlay like a game

»sometimes moving liquify from a smart object, the whole psd on a single layer, to a copy of that layer with some minor modification, the liquify correctly move in the layers but it won't apply shaping etc«

Could one of the Smart Objects be extending beyond the Canvas and the other not? 

I pressed the wrong Key combo :=)

One other thing,
