When I select Photomerge, click on Collage layout, and then click on Add Open Files (in this case I downloaded 3 photos), why do end up with one photo to the far left, laid out horizontally? What I really want is a collage made up of three photos laid out vertically. I was successful the first few times doing this , so now I am stuck, can't figure out why it's doing this. Welcome any insight. Txs!

IMO if you want a to make a regular Photo Collage not a blended Photo montage you should use Photoshop Elements that has a Collage feature or use a Photo Collage template PSD file that has a been design for automated population using a Photoshop Script.

I think it always defaults to a horizontal layout. If there is no alignment to take into account, then just add Canvas and drag the layers into place. You line things up with Free Transform and Smart Guides.
