Photos crashes dragging layer from one document to another , or after pasting from the clipboard

Windows 10 PS ver 23.1.1

Photoshop crashes when dragging a layer from another open photoshop document or when pasting from the clipboard (from another app).

This is an intermittent fault after the 23.1.1 update ( it has happen on previous versions)

If I save the file just after copying over or pasting it seems to stop the problem .

Is there an inordinate amount of metadata? (File > File Info > Raw Data)

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:

First off save all the presets in their respective File Formats.

Then make copies of them at another location than the Application Support and Preferences Folders.
