Photoshop 20.0.1 Eraser tool pixelated

I cant seem to get the eraser tool to produce a smooth edge. It is all pixelated. This is since the upgrade to 20.0.1. I've set "hardness" to 0% and to 100%. Not smooth on the 100% hardness or smooth on the 0% hardness.

any help? Need to finish a project in a matter of hours. Cant do it with this. WHY OH WHY would this setting be changed with an upgrade. VERY unhappy.

    Found the issue... when I made a new layer... the layer mode was automatically set to "dissolve" and not "normal".

    what a weird quirk.

    I tried going back in to Photoshop 2018 to try and at least get the project done... no joy. Seems as though whatever setting that downloading Photoshop 2019 changed... changed it for all versions on the computer.

    furious. Need an answer from Adobe NOW.
