Question

Photoshop 20.0.4 now uses 2 GB memory just to open?

Prior to upgrading Photoshop (with most recent Adobe update), I could open Photoshop (open program only, empty with no files open) and it would take ~500mb of ram.  Now just opening the program (with no files) takes 2 GB?

I've had trouble in the past with Photoshop being a memory hog with no files and Adobe Supports solution was to delete every single plugin, brush, action, etc. that I have ever installed.

I may have to do that again, but all I did was upgrade.  I did NOTHING else but upgrade ver 19.x.x to 20.0.4 to have photoshop go from taking 500mb to now 2gb of memory JUST to open the program? Sheesh.

Deleting all my add-ons and plugins is tedious. Am I expected to do this EVERY time I upgrade?

FYI - I still have Photoshop 2015.1.2 installed on my computer.  It opens and ONLY takes 450mb of memory when open with no files.

Is this the new memory hog normal for Photoshop with ver 20.x.x to now take 2gb of memory JUST for the program?

Thanks for any help.

    Yes, every time you upgrade.

What are your memory settings? Perhaps you tell Photoshop to use 2 GB?

What is your specific version? Please give the exact version, details matter, because bugs get fixed in the x.x bits.

I'm on a PC, not a Mac. The curr ver was in the discussion title (20.0.4). I don't remember my 19.x.x ver as it was uninstalled with Adobe updated me to ver 20.0.4. My old ver I still have installed was noted as 2015.1.2.

I did not change or reset any settings or preferences within Photoshop after it was updated from 19 to 20, unless Adobe did so without my knowledge? But Photoshop is set to use 17879MB (60%) of my memory (I have 32 GB installed). But is Adobe now eating memory on purpose to steal resources?? I know Adobe admitted that every time Photoshop will take memory to use, it will not release it (but "reserves" it to use later).  This, IMO, is very unhelpful and not efficient on users who do MORE than just Photoshop.

My old Photoshop 2015 is set to same settings of 60% of my memory in preferences, but it still only uses <500MB just to open the program.

I just started Photoshop and told it to skip loading plugins... It still is using 2GB memory just to open the program.

I tracked down what is using most of the extra Ram on my system when I load Photoshop.  See if its the same on Your system.   Use menu Edit>Preset Manager.  In the preset manager use the pulldown menu and select Patterns.  In Patters do a Ctrl+A select all then click save set and save that set to your desktop.  Then click the delete butten to delate all the pattern loaded.  Then click done.  Restart Photoshop How much Ran did PS use this time?
