Whenever I need to find the center of a space I draw a selection box for it and use select > transform selection and then drag a guide to that center. In the latest version of Photoshop, transform deactivates the moment you try to drag a guide. This is a huge problem for me.

Hold down the Shift key as you drag the guide

But WHY did this change? Why am I having to take time out of my work to find answers to this? Why object and text selection processes are different, scaling tools changed etc.

It drives me crazy when they change things that have been the same since the beginning. I could probably get use to the whole proportional scaling without shift, but it isn't changed across all of Adobe, so when jumping back and forth between AI and Photoshop it's very confusing since you still hold down shift for proportional scaling in AI.
Here's a hack to fix the scaling to the old way: MUST-KNOW PHOTOSHOP HACK: Bring Back The SHIFT KEY Proportional Scale and Transform - YouTube
