The update to 21.0.1 (released this morning) should fix this bug. Please try it and post back.

Are you writing custom gradients you create do not work?  Please explain what you mean by PSD freezes. Adobe made changes to the gradient editor in 2020.  However, I do use the editor so I doe not know how to use it and would not know what is new or changed.  I just played with creating a custom gradient and added it to an empty layer over an image.   I can not state I had a problem or bug.

I have the same problem with Photoshop 2020. It freezes (hangout) when you create a GRADIENT FILLING LAYER and enter the gradient editor and try to make modifications: 1) if you edit the gradient, when you start modifying it it freezes; 2) If you only choose another one, when you click OK to accept the change, it also freezes. I would appreciate if someone have a workaround. PLEASE NOTE: THIS HAPPEN WITH THE "GRADIENTE FILLING LAYER".

Can you tell us how to produce that problem. I have been unable te produce the problem on my windows 10 PS 2020 workstation. Try setting your PS 2020 Tools and user Preferences. When I double click on a gradient fill layer content thumbnail the Gradient fill Dialog opens  I can click on the gradient in the dialog to open the gradient editor make changes  select other gradients. I can not produce the problem you are having.

I'm having the same problem. I'm on a macbook pro, Catalina. I just wanted to add a gradient to my layer and all works fine until I choose a color for my starting point. From the moment you pick a color and click ok, PS starts to hang and you can't do anything but "Force quit" it.

Hi

It’s a known bug. I was a teaching assistant for three labs at Adobe MAX this week and before each lab we went to PS > Prefs > Performance > Enable Legacy Composting. This helped on most of the hundred or more Macs in the lab, but a few still crashed in each session. Can you try this and see if it works?

The few that crashed anyway did not crash the second time, but we had to turn on Legacy Composting again. Be sure to save before editing a gradient.

Hi carlos_yabibs60816560, CarlosGordillo , and tim.vanhalewyck,

What OS are each of you on? I can't get it to crash on my Mac when I edit a gradient. I did observe the issue at Adobe MAX.

It might be helpful to know not just which platform, but which version?

Is it only happening with Catalina for instance?

Does using Legacy Compositing fix it?

Hi. Im using Mojave on my imac. I enabled Legacy Composting but it didn´t work. It seems to be a problem with the color pick box. When i try to change the color of a gradient or a stroke or shadow, the program stops responding. I also try to erased the custom preference file, but it didn´t work either. For now I decide to go back to PSD 20.0.7

Jane-e, I´m on a iMac late 2015 with macOS Mojave 10.14.5. It seems this issue is affecting only some Mac machines. I tried enabling Legacy Composing but don´t work for me. What would be your opinion: is convinient upgrade my system to Catalina?

Jane-e, I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012),

processor 2,6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7,

memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3,

graphics :

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1 GB

Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

Turning Legacy Composting on fixed it for me but then I'm wondering, am I missing out on certain functionalities now?

Hi carlos_yabibs60816560, CarlosGordillo , and tim.vanhalewyck

There is separate forum for bug reports, and I see this bug was posted there three hours ago.

https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop-21-0-0-problems-with-changing-a-gra...

Please add to that post with voting and comments, including your OS, whether or not Legacy Composting worked, and other pertinent information.

I can confirm it fixed the issue for me. Was getting the freeze when I'd edit an existing gradient filter applied to a layer. Crashed, tried again. Crashed, and found this discussion. Updated to Photoshop 20.0.1 on my Catalina MacOS, and the problem has been solved.

This issue is back. It happened to me several times last week before I updated my OS today and it just happened to me again (after updating my OS to the latest).
