I had not noticed this behavior prior to the newest release. Drop shadows on layers elsewhere in the documents are causing these boxes in the top left corner. There is nothing in the vicinity of the box.
In this sample, the drop shadow on the text center right is causing the box. Turn off the shadow and the box goes away. There are no hidden elements on the pasteboard to the top right—the drop shadow is on that text group only.
Try this:
Go to Preferences > Performance and check "Legacy Compositing"

The core compositing in Photoshop is being developed but in some cases the odd bug occurs for some people depending on OS and CPU. Although you have a workaround it will still be worth reporting below along with your OS and GPU details, that way the developers can take a look:
