Photoshop 21.1.1 Text Font Lag Performance Issue

Hello Adobe,

I just upgraded to the latest version of photoshop - 21.1.1, and now I am running into a very annoying bug which makes working with text difficult.

When I press backspace to remove what I just typed, photoshop lags and sometimes respects the backspace command.  At the moment I have to press backspace about a 100 times to remove one line of text from whatever I'm typing.

It doesn't matter which font I'm using.  Arial performs the same as all the other fonts do.

I unchecked all the type preferences and noticed that nothing is different.

So... how can I type?

I'm running the latest version of Windows 10

Thanks, have a nice day,

UPDATE: 2025
Okay I have been struggling with this for years and never know a fix for it until now.
In the bottom left corner of the screen where it displays the document size. I noticed that it was updating as I was backspacing.
It hit me like a bolt of lightning. Of course! It was lagging because of the calculation (3mb), so don't come in here saying my file was too big :p.
Clicking the little arrow to the right and chaning it to selected too, anything other than document size has fixed the issue.
I can backspace and delete and write and press spacebar as much as I like, without an issue. I hope this helps someone else!!!!

Should I work for Adobe?

Hey Adobe, I called out this bug 4 years about the text tool lagging quite badly, and it still appears to be broken.

Photoshop 26.2.0 release

My computer specs:

Windows 10

CPU = Ryzen Threadripper 1950x

GPU = x2 4070 Ti Supers

Memory = 128 GB of RAM

1 TB of empty hard drive space on a SSD - Fonts installed on there as well.

Also, it would be nice to have spellcheck.  Thanks!

@tylerb76975775 curious to know when you are creating your files, are you creating the images as 8-bit or working with 16-bit and 32-bit images in Photoshop? It can sometimes lead to slightly slower performance compared to 8-bit images.

I actually work with 8-bit because I had the lagging issue, although, I would assume with 128 gigs of RAM and not one, but two NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super graphics cards in a system should be able to handle 16 bit images with ease.

Unfortunately, I can't duplicate the lagging issue. Are you able tp provide a video of that?

Hey Creative Explorer,

With 8, 16, and 32 bit images, they all perform the same.  Here's a video demonstrating the issue:

It's 4 years later... AI robots have taken over the world, aliens have began colonization, and Adobe still can't figure out how to make the type tool work in Photoshop.  Oh, and we still don't have spellcheck either.

Hi @tylerb76975775!

I noticed the original thread is 4 years old. Are you still facing the same issue, or have there been any updates? Also, could you let me know which version of Photoshop you're currently using?

Thanks so much!
Alek

Hey, @tylerb76975775!

Thanks for the extra info, and sorry I haven't been able to help so far. I'll share your case with the team so the devs can take a look, but first, I'll need a bit more info from you.

Thanks for sharing your computer's specs earlier. Could you also share your System Info? You can find it under Help > System Info. Please copy all the text to a file and attach it to your response.

Additionally, it would be helpful if you could share your Sniffer Output files. You can find them in: Users | username | Library | Preferences | Adobe | Photoshop 2025 Settings. There should be some files named sniffer-out.txt, and there might be more than one (sniffer-out2.txt, sniffer-out3.txt, etc.). Could you attach them to your response or use a file-sharing link to share it with us?

Thanks for your patience!
Alek

Hey Alek,

The exported system information file may contain sensitive data about my computer which poses a security risk.  I understand the risk is low / unlikely, but I feel more comfortable sending an email instead.  Where can I send this to?

I am having this issue as well. Still not fixed as of 2024 FEB. I have noticed a correlation between file size. Any document over 15mb/200M and it seems to begin this text lag situation. It struggles to arrow key through text & even deleting text with backspace gets stuck on a chartacter and just won't delete. The only work around seems to be doing operations slowly ei; Pressing backspace with at least 1-2 sec inbetween each character almost as if you need to give it time to think...?

Today is february 10th, 2023, and I have a similar problem.
I use a lot of programs simultaneously (illustrator, photoshop mostly, after effects sometimes) and i need to keep many google chrome tabs open. When I turn on my pc, everything works fine. But as the day goes on, I get some annoying lag on Photoshop.
This lags works like this: whenever I have to create a new text box, the "T" shortcut activates the tool and then it simply turns off, by itself. I am obligated  to get the mouse all the way, click on the text tool at the tool painel. And it happens everyday.
I have a AMD Ryzen 7 5700G with Radeon Graphics, 64,0GB RAM, GeForce RTX 3060, Windows 11 Pro. All my drivers are updated (windows, adobe and GeForce) and I have no clue why this happens.
I ran some tests to check if it was a RAM problem, but no, nothing there.

Yesterday a friend gave me an idea. He said "maybe you have too many fonts installed on your system". I checked and I had more than 5k fonts on my windows. I uninstalled all of them, leaving system fonts only (126 i guess). Restarted the pc and started working. Well, the problem is still there.. 😞   help me Adobe!

Same problem here.

RTX 3080, Ryzen 9, 64g ram, it definitely comes from the software.

Since the 2022 update I also had big lags whilst moving in the pictures/zooming in and out.

Same problem-lag with Fonts. Pretty strong PC.

@Martin Dedron Try disabling rules, it helps in some case.

I am experiencing the exact same problem!!! It is incredibly annoying and has not been fixed with the newest updates. Have you been able to work around it? I hate having to type in another program now.

I question my Photoshop subscription more often now, why are we paying so much money for so many bugs? I'm fed up at this point.

This is a HUGE problem persistent in my setup as well. Photoshop 20 was O.K., but the text transform performance in 21 and 22 is outright broken, laggy and furry inducing to work with.

P.S. I'm using the studio driver. RTX3090 FE and Ryzen 5950X.

I've had an issue with typing in Photoshop 2020 that has not been resolved for quite some time now.  When I go type anything with the type tool, I experice severe lag to the point where Photoshop will fail to recognize my keystrokes as I type.

Here are some details:

Preferences are at their defaults with "Use Graphics Processor" enabled

The type tool has been reset to defaults and there is no change

I am typing with Roboto font and experience the same issue no matter which font I use.

The issue is especially noticeable if I try pressing backspace rapidly.

This lag was not present in Photoshop 2019

My graphics card is a GTX 1080 with the latest drivers installed.  64 GB of ram are present on my machine, and this occurs just as much at the begining of a new photoshop session as one which has been open and modified for some time.

Windows 10 at the latest version, and this issue has been present during earlier versions of Windows as well.

I'm guessing that these issues are probably related to the new Type changes that were implemented in 2020.  What else can I do to further attention towards fixing this issue?

Thank you,

After the recent update everything is extremely slow and laggy. I'll just roll back to older version, this is unusable.
