Photoshop 21.1.3 - Using the Ellipse Tool

When I go Shape tools and select the Ellipse Tool and I move on to the work area all I get is a circle (with the colour chosen) and four handles (see image at bottom left). If I hold down the left mouse and drag the Ellipse does not enlarge. However, if I click on the move tool I get the free transform tool around the Ellipse and I can then enlarge it. In prvious P versions one dragged a circle and was able to make it bigger.

What is the story here? Is this a new way of using the Ellipse/Circle?PS001.jpgPS002.jpg

»if I click on the move tool I get the free transform tool «

No such thing.

Free Transform is not a »Tool« in Photoshop.

But you probably have »Show Transform Controls« checked for the Move Tool in the Options Bar.

»I move on to the work area all I get is a circle«

Could you describe what you actually mean by »move on to the work area«? Is there any clicking and dragging involved?

Have you reset the Tool yet?

What have you done for trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
