Photoshop 23.4.1 update: "Adobe Desktop Service wants to make changes"—WHY?

The Photoshop v 23.4.1 update brings up a dialog box that says, "Adobe Desktop Service wants to make changes," and asks for my system password. I realize CC uses a lot of TSR nonsense behind the scenes, but no way I'm going to allow this without an explanation.

Why this and why with this update?

MacOS 11.6.7 (up to date)

This behavior has ceased spontaneously. Would have been nice to know what was going on, but I'll settle for being able to update the application without encountering this dialog box.

Not really. I want to know why this process is requesting my system password.

Maybe it eventually did it behind your back. Don't be surprised by anything... 😉

Hi @Nancy23042458zn8q

I found this from Adobe Help:

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/adobe-background-processes.html

"Why do I need Adobe background processes?

"Adobe background processes run behind the scenes and perform several important tasks that make your Adobe apps run seamlessly. You may not always notice them, but these critical background processes are doing their job even when you are not working in any of your Adobe apps. Some of them are meant to sync your fonts or libraries to the cloud, while some install automatic updates for your apps.

Similarly, your Creative Cloud desktop app interacts with other background processes that running on your device. These services (such as Adobe Desktop Service, CoreSync, and CCLibrary) perform tasks like app installations, app updates, and assets syncing, to name a few.

"Adobe Desktop Service

"Adobe Desktop Service is the core of the Creative Cloud apps and keeps them running. It is responsible for fetching and processing critical information such as the licenses that you have, apps available in your subscription, and updates required."

Does this answer your question?

I really need to know what this "Adobe Desktop Service" is and why it's asking for my OS password.

Can someone please shed some light on this? I will not update PS unless I know why it's asking and what it plans to do with the information. Otherwise, this could be a phishing scam or some other clever bit of malware.

So is there no information about why this update would engender a request for an Admin password?

I just want to know why this Admin password request is coming up.

I don't see other people posting about this. Does that mean my experience is unique in some way?

"When CC wants to update itself, it says so."

> Indeed. I have to give my pw cos I exit or disable the whole thing between updates.

Hi, @Zesty_wanderlust15A7. All the dialog box says is what I quoted in the title of this post. It's prefilled my OS user name in one data field and is expecting my password in the other. Given that I've used CC for a quite a while and never have seen this behavior, I'm not comfortable complying without an explanation.

BTW,  I restarted my system to see if another update attempt would succeed without this dialog box appearing. No such luck.

When CC wants to update itself, it says so.

Might it be for a CC app update?  More of these seem to become mandatory, and anytime you update they got you 😉  Mine said it was for the CC app at least (months ago).
