Photoshop 24 Crash on Splash Screen

Suddenly, Photoshop 2024 won't open. It crashes on the splash screen when it says "reading brushes".

The brushes preset folder in the app data is empty, and when I add a brush preset file there, it gets past "reading brushes" but then crashes at "building color conversion"

I've tried re-installing, cleaning preferences, using the cleaner tool.

How do I fix this?

I managed to fix it after doing all of the following:

  • uninstalled creative cloud using the Adobe cleaner tool. Don't uninstall from the creative cloud app first.
  • delete all folders named "Adobe" from:
    • c:/program files
    • c:/program files/common files
    • c:/program files (x86)
    • c:/program files (x86)/common files
    • app data (press Windows R, type in %AppData% and press enter)
    • program data (same thing as previous but %ProgramData% instead)
    • documents folder (c:/users/<username>/documents)
  • during the deletion process, you might encounter an error saying the "files are in use"
    • open task manager and end every adobe process. Also Acrobat and Genuine service

Afterwards, restart computer for good luck, then:

  • run sfc and dism commands (command prompt) to repair windows systems. (takes 10 minutes)
  • run chckdsc c: /r /f command (command prompt) to fix file system (takes 1-3 hours)

I also reset and then flash updated my bios, but you probably don't have to do that.

After on more restart, install creative cloud and then photoshop and you should be good to go.
