Photoshop 25.3.1 "create new fill or adjustment layer" not opening appropriate dialogue window

Community Beginner ,
Jan 21, 2024 Jan 21, 2024

I'm using Ps 25.3.1 on Windows 11.

When I try to use Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer, the layer (e.g. levels) is created and the payer info panel opens, but not the dialogue box with the actual adjustment controls / sliders in.

If I use Image> Adjustments> (e.g.) Levels - the dialogue box opens.

I've tried reseting preferences to no avail.

Does anyone have any bright ideas to fix this issue?

Many thanks in advance.

What happens if after you create the Adjustment/Fill Layer you double click on the Adjustment Layer thumbnail in the Layers panel?

I get the layer style dialogue.

Have uninstalled (not retaining prefs) and reinstalled.  Issue persists.

No double click on the Adjustment Layer thumbnail in the layers panel.

For example, double click on the Levels icon  in the Layers panel.

Can you post a screenshot of what you see after doing that?

The adjustment controls are displayed in the Properties panel when using Layer>New Adjustment Layer

Window>Properties

Layer>New Fill Layer should display floating dialog with the adjustment controls

This is what I get - i.e. nothing.

You have the Properties panel already showing which is where the adjustment controls are for Adjustment Layers.

If you create a Layer>New Fill Layer, then you should get a floating dialog with the adjustment controls.

Thanks, Jeff, it's the floating dialogue that used to pop up with Create a New fill or adjustment layer > Levels or via Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Levels that's missing.  Unless I'm losing my marbles it also used to appear when I double clicked the adjustment layer icon.  It just doesn't appear any more.

Unless you had an action or plugin panel that initiated floating adjustments layers, photoshop has had the adjustment controls in a panel since photoshop cs4.

You can get the floating dialogs if you go to Window>Adjustments and Option/Alt click on the Adjustment icons.

Or turn a layer into a Smart Object and use Image>Adjustments as a Smart Filter.

To reopen the Floating Adjustment dialog double click on the name of the adjustment

I don't know - floating dialogues have been the default for me since CS3.  Never did anything cause them.  Then they just stopped.

And, yes, thanks, I can go via Window>Adjustments and Option/Alt click.  But this pops the layer info into the panel, and the floating window can't be activated by double-clicking the adjustment layer icon.

Ordinarily I'd have clicked bottom right as per screenshot and the floating dialogue would pop up when the layer iconm was double-clicked.  This was, as far as I know, behaviour straight out of the box.

Sorry correction, Window>Adjustments and Option/Alt click does open the floating dialogue which on completion pops into the side panel, and cannot be retrieved.

Many thanks for your help, Jeff.

The answer turned out to be toggle the workspace from/to photography and reset photography workspace.  Normality restored.
