Photoshop 6 won't run on Windows 10 on new computer

I just installed a new PC that runs Windows 10. My old computer also used 10. My photoshop 6 ran fine on my old computer and I reloaded my Photoshop 6 disc to the new computer without problem. However, it will not run. I tried to run it as administrator as suggested, but it still won't run.

The same thing just happened to me. I've been using Photoshop 6 with Wondows 10 for at least 5 years, and on this computer for about a year. I used it this morning to edit some photos. Tried to reopen it this afternoon and it simply won't work, same unrecoverable error message other people have noted here. Did anybody ever recover from this error? I've been considering Elements for years, but would rather avoid the learning curve. Yeah, I'm old.

@Rachel5DC6,

PS6 from 2000 or CS6 from 2012?  There's a huge difference between them.

If it's the latter, try unistalling and reinstalling CS6 from your installation disk.

It's the former, PS6 fprm 2000. I suppose I could reinstall that from the disk though. Will try before giving up. Thanks!

LOLs... I updated my hardware and installed the latest Win 10.  Now my old Photoshop 6.0 from about 1998 won't load.  Same error as others previously stated.  I use PS about 3 times a year, so I'm not interested in buying it again, or paying for a subscription.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Suggest you consider spending money, or get hold of an old computer - perhaps from someone's loft. I assume you read all the responses already and tried the things that worked for some people.

Yep.  I have an old laptop I use occasionally.  I'll install PS 6.0 and use it there, with a USB mouse for better control .  It will serve my needs adequatelty. Not real convenient, but adequately.

Try using a virtual machine like VirtualBox, or VMware.

Similarly, I've been using Photoshop 6 since about 2002.  Pissed me off when Windows 10 ver 2004 wouldn't allow it to work.  Finally got it to work using compatibility mode set to Windows 95.  However, it then keeps asking if you want to allow the program to make changes to hard drive.  There does not appear to be any solution to this other than turning off that Windows feature completely. Good luck.

Photoshop 6 from 2001 was never intended to be used on modern computers.  Most software has an expected shelf-life of 3-5 years after which it needs to be replaced.  I think it's fair to say you got way more than your money's worth out of it.  It's time to find new software.

MODERN OPTIONS:
Photoshop Elements 2020 (approx $100, no subscription needed).  It doesn't have all the bells & whistles of Photoshop CC, but it's a major improvment over PS6.
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 2021

Creative Cloud Photography Plan -- approx $10/month for 12 months. Includes the very latest versions of these great products & services:
-- Photoshop CC and Photoshop on iPad,
-- Lightroom on desktop, mobile and the web,
-- Lightroom Classic,
-- Portfolio website + hosting,
-- Spark with premium features,
-- Bridge,
-- 20 GB cloud storage (upgradable to 1 TB).

Photoshop CC v22 will open files created in Photoshop 6 so nothing is lost (unless you have deleted them from your hard drive but that has nothing to do with Photoshop).

Thank you so much for replying so quickly. Unfortunatly as a complete novice using it for my designs I did so much artwork I downloaded them onto cds as photoshop psd files. I have 150 dics averaging 10-20 designs on each!! If any of my friends had adobe shop I suppose I could use theirs and convert them from photoshop psd files to something else tiffs maybe....however non of my friends have.Any suggestions would be very helpful

CS6 runs fine on Windows 10. PS 6 is very old and may not be able to handle the large size disk we user these days. If you tried  windows 10 make older apps or programs compatible  and could not get it to work.  Try creating small Disk Partitions and install PS 6 in one see if it will run. Parts of PS 6 will still be install on you boot drive.

Hello, I face exactly the same problem. After upadte of Windows 10 functions, PSP does not want to start. The error message says: Unable to continue becauseof hardwareor system error. Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable.
Error appears just when the fonts are being initialized.

Is there any error log, which says what is the reason for an error?

You are likely going to need some legacy component like DirectX 9 or the older version of the Windows installer. Check the Microsoft web site. They are offering respective downloads.
