Photoshop always prompts me with a Save As dialog when saving

Yes, same title as the thread from a year ago but, regretably, the answer there doesn't apply.

This has only started happening since I was forced to upgrade to Windows 10 by a new motherboard that only supports Windows 10. To take the smallest possible example; I have an Action that opens a bitmap, changes it from RGB to Indexed and then saves it. Of course, the Action no longer works because the Save As dialog comes up and wants me to save it as .psd. The file is 7Kb in size. Frustrating isn't the word because a lot of my images need reducing to Indexed as the last action.

I tried setting Photoshop to Run As Administrator (right-click | Properties | Compatibility tab) but all that did was to disable drag'n'drop opening of files.

I should have added 'unless you say No to the Save As dialog'.

In the Indexed Color dialog uncheck Transparency and see if the image will Save without the Save As dialog popping up.

What format was the original document? Some formats do not support index.

It's a bitmap. It started as a .psd, was saved as a bitmap and the .psd was then closed. The bitmap was opened and the index applied.

Something else that might either help or alternatively, muddy the waters. Even after the indexed bitmap has been saved, the asterisk indicating an unsaved file remains on the filename tab. Closing the tab launches the 'Save As' dialog again. Rinse and repeat until you close CC Photoshop 2018.

If the chosen save format does not support all the original file properties, data has to be thrown out and discarded. Photoshop will not allow this, to protect you from yourself, so to speak.

So Photoshop saves out what you want as a copy, branched out from the original. But that means you still have the original file open in Photoshop. This is not the same file as what you saved out. Do you want to keep that? Yes/no.

A better way to do this is Save For Web or Export. Both can be Actioned to a separate destination, with "close no save" of the original. Then you can delete the originals later if that's what you want.
