Question

Photoshop asks to save the file though no modifications were made

Photoshop 2024, Window 11

Issue: see topic. Not really a bug, more of an annoyance.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open any image, let's say a BMP

2. Open the "Save for web" dialog (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+s) and select PNG.

3. Save the PNG.

4. Close the BMP with Ctrl+w.

Result: PS would popup a save requester, though no modifications have been done.

Impact: very annoying

It's OK, I can live with it. Like I wrote, for me this is just illogical. I know a similar thing from Indesign.

So the logic has been explained, it's just unwanted behaviour for you, but not for others where this is useful and wanted.

Untested, but have you tried Export As instead?

Jesus, is this so hard to understand? It's not about the export. The Save for web dialog DOES NOT change the original file, so it's not necessary to ask to save it. It's illogical, dumb programming and most of all, ANNOYING.

Stephen is correct. SFW (and Print) metadata are saved with the file.

To get around it, use a SFW action that ends with Close/no save. It's actually very safe, because it sends the original right back to where it came from without any change whatsoever.

If you want to decide where to save during the action, check "show dialog" on the Export step.

Photoshop is storing the Save for Web settings so that when you come back and perform another export it can pick up where it left off for consistency.

From memory printing is the same.

An action or script can be used with a close without saving option preset and run from a keyboard shortcut (risky, so beware).

Wrong. This dialog is an export, a "Save as" so to speak. The file itself, as shown with its file name in the tab, remains a BMP.

@Doc Maik but you did make a modification, you change the file type
