Photoshop Average Blur Filter Not Working?

Hello everyone, I'm fairly inexperienced in Adobe Photoshop, and want to try and get out of my comfort zone a little. I started work on a irregular polygonal background - a photo of what I've got so far should be linked on this question - following a tutorial I found. Essentially, the gist was that I needed to use the Polygonal Lasso tool to select triangles, then use the Average Blur filter to get a consistent colour. This worked fine, and I got most of a page done, but when I went back the next day to finish the background, this technqiue I had been using had stopped working completely. All of the Blur filters had stopped working, although I only really care about the Average one at the moment, and resetting Preferences, opening and closing the document and the application has done absolutely nothing. I even went to a different device on a different network, and it still didn't work. Has Adobe rolled out a new update that's changed how these filters work, and can anyone recommend a different way to get this background effect? Thank you.

Hi @Isaac27419877rg57, sorry to hear about the problem, it sounds strange for sure. I can use all the Blur filters on your file, here is a screenshot of one that is easy to see, so it's not your document (Windows 10, Photoshop 24.0.1 Release). Will the Blur filters work on any other files you try? If it's system-wide, and a Preferences reset didn't clear it out, it's hard to know what's going on. I don't know of a different way to get that background effect, but other people here likely will. On your question, “Has Adobe rolled out a new update that's changed how these filters work,” the short answer is no, not intentionally. The latest version is 24.0.1. If you roll back to 24.0.0 or earlier, does the same thing happen? Otherwise, from Photoshop under Help > System Info, click the copy button and paste the text in a reply to this thread, and we'll take a look at your system.

Here's the system info. Having done some further testing, it bizzarely works if I open an image and then do the technique I mentioned above, but if I do what I was originally doing and create a gradient or add an embedded image to a new blank file, then it doesn't work at all. With that in mind, I can still create the intended effect, just with less flexibility and more middle steps, but I still want to know why I was able to do it just fine a few days ago, only for Adobe to seemingly discontinue that function without any warning.

Could you post a screenshot with your layers by any chance? Just trying to find some clues as to why an average blur wouldn't work with yours. But yes, looks strange...
(You could try box blur at high setting, if it works of course, but not exactly to same as averaging)
