Question

Photoshop CC brushes extremely laggy with Wacom Intuos Pro!

I've been messing around with digital painting on an iPad for a while, and just bought a Wacom Intuos Pro (medium) so I could do so on my Macs.  I immediately noticed input lag from the Intuos, so started to do some testing.  It doesn't appear to be the tablet.  The same lag exists in Photoshop when using the Mac's trackpad, but the problem disappears entirely when I move into Corel Painter, trackpad or Intuos.  Some lag exists in Illustrator, but not nearly as bad as Photoshop - Photoshop CC really seems to be the culprit.

I've uploaded a video (from my iPad; sorry for the quality) of this behavior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwR76V-hmLU

Any thoughts?  Calling Adobe first resulted in finger-pointing to Wacom (quickly squelched when I pointed out the same problem existed when using the trackpad), and then sending me a link to a 5-year-old Adobe Forum post that's for Photoshop CS4 and Wacom Intuos 4 tablets - that's 3 versions back for Photoshop and 2 versions back for the tablet.  (Of course, the solutions present in that post no longer apply.)  Here's the link, for anyone interested: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3709366

Any thoughts?  Painter seems nice, but I'd really like to be able to do digital painting in Photoshop as well.  This issue makes that quite a bit more difficult.

    Hi,

Im not sure if you've got to the bottom of this one or not. A couple of years ago, with Vista and OS prior to Snow Leopard I was having issues with the Wacom Intuos.

The first cab off the rank if new driver install wasnt helping was to go into Wacom Tablet Properties / Grip Pen / Mapping and uncheck "Use Windows Ink".

There's even a vid on it these days for the people getting into trouble with Win 8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukJ-2_F2wO8

I'm sure Wacom have worked on fixes but it might still be worth checking your pen settings. As far as I recall, that "dialogue box" was still present on Wacoms' Apple installation, though I cant say if it is still the case.

I had zero issues when I migrated through Win 8.

UPDATE: Wacom says this is a known issue, and Adobe is working on a fix!  In short, it's an issue caused by how Mavericks handles things, and how well (or not) Photoshop works with that.

Here's an email I just received from Wacom after sending them a link to the video I posted:

There were quite a few changes when Apple released the 10.9 update, and one of them affects how it handles the priority of various active applications and the handling of memory/system resources. Unfortunately, Photoshop does appear to have trouble with over consumption of system resources within this version of OS X. This causes other applications, which are considered lower priority, to not have the same access as they should to resources. The affect is what you are seeing, in the delay of input. Any sort of intense brushwork or 3D rendering will really highlight the behavior. We have been told that Adobe is currently working on an update for Photoshop, that should resolve this, but we have not been provided an estimated time for its release. It is possible that you may see some improvement from the tablet side once an updated driver is released for 10.9, which should be any time, but this would likely not affect other input devices on the system.

I just knew this was probably a Mavericks issue. That's why I mentioned it before.

So far Mavericks has proven itself to be the buggiest MacOs in a long time.

If you gentlemen don't mind, I'd like to interrupt this thread hijacking with a suggestion to Ezra Ekman. You remember him, right? He started this thread with a question about the brush lag he was getting with his Intuos tablet in Photoshop on his Mac?

Here's my suggestion: Open the Wacom Tablet panel in System Preferences and turn "Tip Double Click Distance" to Off and see if that speeds things up a bit.

Thank you, Frank.  I didn't want to be rude, but yes; that's kind of what I was thinking.  ;-)  I appreciate you bringing the thread back around.

I'm not in front of that machine at the moment, I'll give that a shot and see if it works.  If so (or if not), I'll report back.  Thanks again!

You never posted what the canvas sizes were in the video you posted. You also did not post anthing about the two brush setting you used.

I also posted that I have not installed Painter so I do not know when you work in painter if painter works on scaled down canvas and up samplet to the actual pixels in the background.

Photoshop seems to work one the canvas actules pixels.  That If I make a new document with a 144mega pixels canvas and I zoomed out so the entire camvas is shown on screen. If a paint with a normal brush with a 100 pixel diameter round tip the brush the stroke will look the exact same as the stroke he showed in the video the same size and the same lag.   That if I zoom in to actual pixels so the only 2Mpixels of the 144MPixel canvas was on my 1920x1080 display that no matter what brush size I use  thers was no lag.

That on the other hand that was not the story in I use a large bush tip size on a wet mixer brush the was a big lay.  If the brush tip is small on the wet mixer brush the was still some lag but not a problem IMO.  So Photoshop is actually working on the 144MegaPixel canvas in real time not in the background.

I don't know how Painter works  does it work small and up sample to the real canvas size in a background task.  You provided no information about the sizes and settings used in both of you demo strokes.

what's the resolution of the image? that makes a huge difference. if it's 300dpi, then you're going to see a lag. If your image is 72dpi, then the lag will be much less noticable.

144,000,000pixels  at 300dpi and 144,000,000 pixels at 72dpi is 144,000,000 there is no difference in pixels only the resolution when zoomed to fit on screen my screen is 1920x1080 pixels so the 144.000,000 image is scaled to  2,073,600 pixels,  When I paint over this scaled image with the image resolution is set to 72dpi or 300 dpi.  Photoshop has to paint over the 16,000px by 9,000px canvas over the 144,000,000 image and scale the results to the 1920x1080 size.  There is absolutely no difference in lag time at any resolution 144,000,000 pixels are 144,000,000 pixel DPI only changes size on devices the support  images dpi like printers.

makes a huge difference for me. working at 72dpi and the brushes work fast. Working at 300dpi slows the brushes down somewhat. Working at 600dpi slows the brushes down even more. You must have a nasa computer or something lol

I have not been able to produce a demo that look exactly like your Photoshop lag Demo . But what did to produce a demo the look exactly I feel the lag is not a  problem. What I did was open a new document that is 16,000 pixels by 9,000  pixels.  Put Photoshop into full screen mod and used fit on screen and use a brush tip round 100pixel so it would look the size used in you demo and I set the spacing to 1%.  The brush stroke look exactly like your demo.   However the image is 144,000,000 and Photoshop had to lay down a million or more pixels.

I have an intuos 5 touch not the pro. However have user my son's intuos5 pro on my machine for his first pro had a bad touch ring and he wanted me to test his tablet.

I do not have a problem with normal brushes like you show in Photoshop.  I can produce long delays using large wet mixed brushes though. However ever small mixer brushes work more like the brush stroke you show using painter painter on my windows workstation in Photoshop CC 14.2.1 current version and prior versions.

I using wacom driver 6.3.7.5 I see there is a version 6.3.7.6 I'll download a try that now.
