Is it possible to apply a gradient to a shape so that it wraps around the shape?

Or like this - which is a stroke with a shape burst gradient:

You can change the outer glow Contour to achieve a similar look to the stroke example shown by Dave, or you can pick a Contour that more closely follows the edges of the shape.
