Question

Photoshop changed the way you select elements and groups / layers since last update?

I never ever touched the "Auto-Select" Checkbox or the "Layer" to "Group" Dropdownmenue... but since the last update I can't select elements like I used to do. I usually double clicked into a group and than select the individual child elements to anrange them or move them around. This is not working anymore... why??

Is there another setting I can controll this behanvior? Why would photoshop change this? Can someone help me? Thanks 🙂

Double-clicking a group to enter Isolation mode is a feature of Adobe Illustrator and has never been part of Photoshop.

In Photoshop, Auto-Select drives me crazy 80% of the time (although I do like it 20% of the time.) Instead I use the two methods we had for years and years before Auto-Select was ever introduced. Try this:

  • Turn off Auto-Select
  • Right-click a pixel in your document to see a list of all layers that have a pixel in that spot, then select the layer you want from the context sensitive menu. This works best, of course, if your layers have proper names and are not Layer1, Layer16, Layer73, etc.
  • Ctrl+Click in your document to select the layer you want to work with

I am also a fan of locking or hiding layers that I'm not working with at the moment.

I hope this helps,

Jane

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

Hi @NiklasGemkow double-clicking into a group in the image never dug down into the layers.

You say you never touched "Auto Select" but have you tried changing the settings to see if having "Auto-Select Layers" checked works the way you expected to? That would allow you to click to select a layer inside a Layer group...
