Photoshop Color picker banding

When I upgraded to the most recent version of CC, my photoshop color picker started giving me issues.  I don't have the usual number of colors, but a smaller sub-set.  I've had this issue before, and support had me erase a particular preference file, but I cannot find any documentation that tells me which one, and I don't recall.

Uncheck "only web colors".

that did it.  Since when did web use 4-bit color per channel?  Anyway, thanks for the help.
