Photoshop crashes and actions are slow

Thanks, Kevin.  Interestingly I just attempted to manually update the GPU drivers and it wouldn't let me "An error has occurred" (as non-descript as that and seemingly no further information available).

Both crashes occurred while working on TIFs (126MB files), so maybe you are on to something re drive space.  

I'm afraid there is no crash log (or if there is, I don't know where I'd find it?), and it didn't provide much opportunity to catch any on-screen messages prior to rebooting itself... other than (paraphrasing) 'the program has encountered a catastrophic failure' (one instance was while using a subect mask within ACR and the other was while creating a new watermarking action; I was literally just dragging the watermark into place).
