Photoshop crashes when trying to print

Photoshop (CC version 19.1.4) will stop instantly when I try to print. The printer is the Epson Et-2650. I installed it a couple of times again. The printer works well with other programs. Can anybody help what to do?

Correct answer hawkhalf

I realized that I had my printer, Epson XP-225, installed twice on my Windows 10 system. That is once installed through Windows system itself and once with a software from Epson. After I uninstalled one of them (the Epson software one) Photoshop started printing again without crashing. Just thought I might share that with you all in case it helps someone.

I have discovered the same problem and none of the fixes described here work for me. MacBook Pro 2012, Photoshop CS5 (Yes, I know, it's old) - newly hooked up to a Epson P5300. Works fine through Epson Print Layout. Cant find the "Reset Preferences on Quit" in Preferences.

@Ian26410923x02c

Perhaps try a thorough reset of Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

Here’s some info on how to do that:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state. This method ensures all preferences and any user presets which may be causing a problem are not loaded.

  1. Quit Photoshop.

  2. Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder.
macOS: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Windows: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note: The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS. To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see How to access hidden user library files.
  3. Drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe for a back-up of your settings

  4. Open Photoshop.

New preferences files will be created in their original location.

Note re macOS: The user Library folder is hidden by default.

To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see here for how to access hidden user library files.

https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

Unexpected behaviour may indicate damaged preferences. Restoring preferences to their default settings is a good idea when trying to troubleshoot unexpected behaviours in Photoshop. check out the video

And here’s an earlier forum discussion as an aid to understanding

https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/quick-tips-how-to-reset-photoshop-preferences/td-p/12502668

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Here is general info about that:  https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#BackupPhotoshoppreferences

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references.

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

Preferences file locations: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html\

[on MacOS see: Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

  https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/access-hidden-user-library-files.html

In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

If that doesn't fix the issue:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop.

Still hanging?

Go to Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop.

Do you still have problems?

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! It’s worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.

I hope this helps

For me it's definitely to do with Epson drivers .. I have 5 printers on network and only when I added an Epson did the problems begin ..

I even got rid of it and things went back to normal but a while later I had a requirement for another Epson (different one this time) and the crashing issues were back .. i could get around it by resaving my psd templates with the default printer saved and all the usual resetting preferences etc and slowly the problem went away , however i am now on my third Epson (I know I know gluten for punishment but it's the only printer I could get for  my requirement / budget)  and the issue is the worst it's been .. I can mitigate to a large extent with all the tricks workarounds I've got to know from previous , however there are still instances occasionally where ps crashes and I can't explain it .. so annoying I've spent so many hours testing different scenarios and getting to the point where I can predict the crash and subsequently take action to avoid, but I'm now at the end of the road , why oh why can't adobe have an error instead of crash I'll never know 🤦🏻‍♂

this is a 5 year old issue that still has not been corrected.  The office i work out of has multiple of the same printer on the network(different buildings) and a single printer is actually acting as 3 different printers. Can we get this resolved please?

@CHRISTOPHER29097811b8c3 Just FYI, this forum is almost entirely supported by volunteers.

You'd be more likely to get help if you fully describe the issues you have and include screenshots inline in the text. (not attached)

I'd start a new thread, personally, with an informative title - as you seem to have a different issue to the OP. "a single printer is actually acting as 3 different printers"

Printer identification is most likely an OS issue rather than Adobe, anyway.

Thanks Bjorn,  Recreating Perferences worked!  I had not experienced this before, but I see it seems to be an ongoing issue.

I was having the same problem that started when I installed an Epson desktop all-in-one printer.  The plotter that I use to print PS files is also an Epson.  I uninstalled the desktop Epson and PS stopped crashing when I hit print.  Not sure how to fix the conflict, but it is more important for my business flow that the Epson plotter works.  Probably will just get a different brand all-in-one desktop printer.

I am having a similar problem with my Windows 10 OS and an Epson P800 printer. Two problems been happening intermittently for a couple of years:

1) Photoshop crashes the instant I try to Print.

2) I set up an image to print in a precise position on the page, and the print preview shows it in the correct position, but when it prints, it moves randomly about 1/2" so it's often falling off the page or printing on top of an adjacent image.

I have tried multiple times re-setting Photoshop Preferences (a hugely annoying and time-consuming task to put all my preferences back the way I like them) and that usually works for a while, but then suddenly stops working.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Photoshop and my printer driver multiple times and update them regularly. In fact, when my whole system crashed a couple of months ago I had a completely new install of Windows 10 and ALL my software (sigh!). I assumed this would solve the problem. But yesterday Photoshop crashed when I tried to print, and even after resetting preferences (SEVERAL TIMES!) my prints are intermittently printing in the wrong place on the page today.

I can't begin to tell you how frustrated I am! It is a monumental waste of time and paper! PLEASE can somebody come up with a fix for this problem.

If the problem of PhotoShop crashing when "print" is clicked, it could mean the problem is with the document, unless of course, it crashes with all documents.  I was able to recreate what I wanted to print in a new file.  All went well. I didn't know how to fix the file.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the problem happens randomly with different photographs I'm trying to print. Sometimes the same photo will print just fine; at other times Photoshop crashes. So I don't think it's the file itself that is corrupted. Also, I will often work for hours (days!) on fine-tuning a photograph. I shouldn't have to start from scratch and re-create it because of a Photoshop crash.
