Photoshop crashes when using any materials slider in 3D

Adobe Photoshop Version: 20.0.4 20190227.r.76 2019/02/27: 1205725  x64

Operating System: Windows 10 64-bit

glgpu[0].GLName="NVIDIA Quadro P4000"

Note this also happens with my GTX 1080 Ti when I swapped out the Quadro to see if it made a difference.

Fresh Install

No 3rd party plug-Ins

Steps to reproduce crash:

Open Adobe and create new document.

Create some text and select New extrusion from the layer under 3D

Click on Materials

if I change any slider or enter any value in any slider like Reflection or Bump PS crashes immediately.

This occurs with any of the materials selected.  It seems the only 3D portion that does not work is the materials tab.  Everything else seems to work.  Go back a version doesn't solve it but I only back one version.  Its worked in the past but this is a fresh installed PC so not sure what's going on.

I've also tried changing memory for 3D as well as under the performance tab and changed the GPU settings all around.  No matter what i do simply using any materials slider  crashes the app

one of the many crash reports sent to Adobe:

Are you using the materials filter in the 3D panel ? If so , try without it - just go straight to the material See here: https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/photoshop-3d-crash-in-v20-0-4

Turning off all my overclocking settings didn't make a difference as well.  I've clicked the Me Too as well.

Thanks guys.

I'm also crashing when using any of the 3D Material sliders. Other 3D features appear to work OK, and I've been editing 360 panoramas without issue.

  1. This occurs with the wine glass and cube bundled 3D mesh objects (and probably the other objects)
  2. I've tried changing my advanced graphics card settings, to normal and basic.
  3. I'm running:
    Photoshop Version: 20.0.6 20190724.r.80 2019/07/24: 1207344 x64
    Windows 10.0.18362 64-bit build 1903 with 16Gb Ram
NVidia GeForce GTX 960 with driver 436.48 at 3840 x 2160 resolution (Level 4 cache enabled)
    Intel Core i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHz
  4. I don't have another graphics card to try, and there is no Windows Event log error, but I do get an Adobe Crash Report pop up
  5. PSErrorLog.txt does not seem to have a corresponding error
  6. sniffer-out.txt does not show a stderr message

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. How do I go "straight to the material"?
  2. Is there a workaround to change the Reflection slider value?

OK, I figured it out. I still go to the 3D panel, but I don't click the material button (Filter by material, as you said).

It all works fine now. Many thanks!

You're welcome

UPDATE:

So i haven't shut off all my overclocking settings yet and i will do that but check this out.

If i'm in 3D view and select a material from the properties window and not by clicking on Filter by Materials i can use all the properties without a crash.  Everything works.

The second i click on the Filters By button up top for materials and then select an item it will crash the second i use shine or reflection but it won't crash if i go to materials via a different way then clicking on a filter such as just navigating through the tree node and selecting a material.  very strange.

You mentioned in your first post "Fresh Install", was that a fresh install on Windows or a GPU driver, just wondering if you tried logging on with a different Windows user account to see if it still happens

Thanks, guys for the quick suggestions.  This is what I have done based off what you guys provided and the end result.  Also, my normal GPU is the 1080 TI but I had a Quadro P4000 laying around and Quadro's usually are more stable although I don't think this is a GPU issue.  Regardless see below for what I've done and davescm the Photoshop >Help>System info will be with my Quadro since I don't want to switch them out right now seeing I get the same result but if you really want me to I will.

Note:  When switching GPU's or installing drivers I always use DDU (**I never had both GPU's in at the same time)

1. Quadro does not use the same drivers as GTX and yes I used both known stable drivers for both when using each card including the latest ones.

2. All other GPU accelerated and GPU required tasks seem to work well including all of the 3D including rendering and shadows and depth of field and all other property pages seem to work fine BUT for materials.  Although i can get some material properties to work when setting them they all will eventually throw an exception but its the Reflection and Shine ones that do it 100% of the time.

3. Went all the way back to version 2017 and at first, I thought it was working but then when i went to try it again it didn't error it just vanished.  No pop-up.  I guess back then they didn't catch every exception

4. The gigabyte and turbo boost seem interesting but yeah i don't get blue screen but i will turn off all overclocking features just to see if it makes a difference.

5. Reset Preferences.

Still, get the same error and again only when changing the sliders within materials once in a 3D layer.

Hi

Have you checked Windows event viewer for crash reports relating to Photoshop.exe

Launch event viewer and then click on application on the left and then filter current log on the right

Put a check mark in error and click OK, then look for errors relating to Photoshop.exe

Yes multiple times and nothing.  The only time i get a PS error is when it just crashes and PS doesn't pop-up the box.  For version 2017 since no PS box pop-up occurred i did get a report and I'm looking into that now but from the looks of it the error was basically windows going PS didn't respond after an X amount of time since it was frozen and windows killed the process.

When you say 'swapped out the GPU' I assume you mean that you removed the Quadro and put in the GTX.  I _know_ it is a crazy thing to ask, but you never know.

Did the P4000 come from the old system? Or is it the same hardware with a new OS install?

Can you think of anything that correlates to the failure?  Something new, like a later version of Windows 10?

What about GPU driver?  I don't know if Quadro cards use the same driver as GTX, so were you trying the GTX card with the Quadro driver?  I'm totally guessing here, and throwing stuff out there.  (Woah!!!  I nearly used some management speak there.  If it happens again, somebody shoot me.  Joan will volunteer for sure LOL).

How about other GPU dependent functions?  Do they work?

Photoshop graphics processor (GPU) card FAQ

You CPU sounds kind of new, so if it is a new build, do you have the latest motherboard firmware?  There were issues with some Gigabyte MBs with the i9X CPUs I remember.  Puget Systems put up a fix for that, so might know if your set up has issues.

I'm guessing that 3D won't work with GPU acceleration turned off, but if not, you could try that, or try different drawing mode settings (in Preferences > Performance).

Well put out a shout for our Dave who is our 3D expert

Hi

I've repeated your steps and get no crash here in Photoshop CC2019 (v20.0.4) using a GTX1080 with Nividia driver 417.71 on Windows 10 v1809.

I would do the following steps to narrow it down.

1. Reset your Photoshop Preferences (Preferences >General >Reset Preferences on Quit then close and restart Photoshop)

2. Do a clean install of the video driver (this is an option under advanced when installing/updating the GTX driver - I assume there will be a similar option for the Quadro)

3. If you have Turbo Boost on your system, temporarily disable it and see if you still get the crash. As Trevor mentioned there were some Gigabyte motherboards which were crashing (although I think they were blue screen crashes) and were resolved with a BIOS update.

If you still have the issue, please go to Photoshop >Help>System info click the copy button then paste the info into a post here. It may help us to see what is different on your set up.

have you tried using the older Photoshop versions?

if test = yes this is a known issue & you can just keep both versions for when you need to do 3D work
