Photoshop Crop Tool Classic Mode Has Changed

Something has changed in the way the crop tool works in Photoshop CC. I've installed the latest version (2019, release 20.0.0) on a Mac running running 10.13.6 High Sierra.

When I have "Use Classic Mode" checked and draw a crop box on an image, then try to move a single side to adjust the crop, that side plus the two sides that touch it all move together to preserve the aspect ration of crop box I originally drew. That's not how it used to work - all sides were independent.

If I uncheck Classic Mode, I can adjust any side without any other side moving. But the underlying original image shifts to keep the crop box centered, which I find very annoying and almost causing nausea to set in.

The W and H boxes are empty, and no aspect ration has been selected.

How do I get back to the way it used to work? I want the image to be stationary, and I want to be able to adjust the sides of a crop box independently.

Hold down shift.

The change is associated with the new way the modifiers work on transform.

This new method is a pain.  There should be a option to turn off the maintain size ration in the crop tool.

Dave, it does not work in 2022. I held down shift and the crop box stillwants to go its own way

The latest crop tool, version 24.0.0, is an abomination.  Sorry, but now, instead of using the crop tool to straighten and crop all in one operation, I'm forced to straighten, then switch to Rectangular Marquee to outline, and finally do a crop (Alt-I-P). This is a boatload of extra work; if I'm doing a hundred scans, I'm now doing 300 operations instead of 100. The previous version had the smoothest operation of any of the uncountable versions I've used. I realize Adobe loves to introduce incompatible changes, I suppose in order to keep us all from being bored, but this change is above and beyond:  it is, frankly, a Hindenburg.
